Preparing women for administration: a self-directed learning model

Abstract

Presented is a model for self-directed learning for women in administration that is founded in the developmental tasks and major life choices that women face. This heuristic learning model builds toward empowering women administrators to make choices in career management that integrate with their life choices. That is, a parallel process is created whereby the professional learning model both prefigures and reflects the issues of self-direction and choice essential to effective administrative practice. Grounding elements in the self-directed educational model are the issues of (1) women's developmental tasks related to adult psychosocial development, roles, and functions, (2) special career planning choices faced by women, and (3) particular aspects of women as learners. These precursors must be considered to develop an empowering model of education for women administrators.
