Government, Funded Nonprofits, and Accountability

Abstract

Explores the state side of accountability issues in nonprofit-state relationships in Australia, drawing on 1994 interview data from 11 program officers in two Queensland human services departments & 8 executives of nonprofit human services organizations. Findings suggests that significant constraints hinder the ability of state funding bodies to manage accountability processes for grant funds. The issues identified -- eg, funding, size, staff overload -- permit reflection on the possible mediating impact of different political systems on accountability processes & on the limitations of principal-agent frameworks in building accountability processes & state-nonprofit relations. 27 References.
