Attitudes toward women managers in human service agencies: are they changing?

Abstract

Responses of male and female managers in public social service organizations are analyzed to determine whether attitudes toward women managers have changed over the last 10 years. This study, as well as one conducted by the authors 10 years ago, focuses on attitudes concerning the impact of certain variables that may affect negatively or positively the initial movement of women into managerial positions, women functioning as managers, and the promotion of women in the management hierarchy. Although improvements in the attitudes toward women managers have taken place, there continues to be a dichotomy in the views of men and women on all variables studied.
