Women and Management: A Conceptual Framework

Abstract

A conceptual model of research on women & management combining perspectives from leadership & feminist theory is presented. Leadership theories can be divided into trait vs situational approaches, while feminism can be divided into liberal & radical feminist approaches. Combining these perspectives produces a four-quandrant framework: (1) traits-liberal feminism, emphasizing difference literature on dispositions & perceptions; (2) traits-radical feminism, emphasizing positive differences & offering alternatives; (3) situation-liberal feminism, emphasizing contingency research & organizational structure; & (4) situation-radical feminism, emphasizing the rethinking of organizational goals & values & research. The quadrant provides a useful tool for analyzing the literature on women & leadership.
