Examining the Glass Ceiling: Gender Influences on Promotion Decisions

Abstract

Evidence continues to demonstrate that women managers receive lower organizational rewards such as salary & promotions than men. Two recent studies are presented to illustrate the research focus on the personal characteristics of organizational decisionmakers in an effort to explain the persistent & pervasive glass ceiling. Although the gender of organizational decisionmakers does not seem to influence promotion decisions, decisions by both male & female managers seem to be influenced by social & organizational contexts.
