Corporate Philanthropy and United Way: Challenges for the Year 2000
Abstract
Investigates the influence of strategic philanthropy on corporate
contributions to United Way, drawing on 1993 mail questionnaire data
from a national sample of 226 large (Fortune 1,000) US corporations.
Defining strategic philanthropy as the process by which contributions
are targeted to meet both business objectives & recipient needs,
analysis indicates that highly strategic programs gave a lower % of
total direct contributions to United Way than less strategic programs.
Based on these results, it is recommended that United Way staff &
other nonprofit managers work more closely with corporate contribution
managers to develop measurable criteria regarding the impact of health
& human services contributions on strategic business goals &
objectives. 2 Tables, 37 References. Adapted from the source
