Women's Incentives for Community Participation in Policy Issues

Abstract

The reasons for political voluntary action were examined using a sample of women (N = 46), active in community groups, in a North Central US metropolitan area. Data were collected by means of a semistructured instrument in group interviews. Results show that the vast majority of women intend to become employed outside their homes in the next five years. Actual & potential rewards & disadvantages for initially joining or staying on as volunteers are examined. The structure of the volunteer political issues group is found to be a major factor in generating & maintaining commitment. Several conclusions are drawn regarding the nature of volunteer "careers" in social action voluntary groups.
