Languages, Ideologies, and Cultures in Nonprofit Boards

Abstract

The role of language within nonprofit boards of directors was examined through observation of board meetings; review of agency documents; & interview of board members, chief executive officers, & agency staff of 7 nonprofit organizations. Analysis revealed 3 forms of discourse in board meetings & activities: (1) mission language, emphasizing agency/board values, aspirations, & commitment; (2) operations language, focusing on the workings & tasks of the organization; & (3) manners language, focusing on the preferred values & norms for relating & communicating with others in public. Operations language tended to displace mission considerations & the displacement was facilitated by the use of manners language. 19 References. Adapted from the source document.
