Resignation or Dismissal?

Abstract

In the executive director's opinion, Bluehills Family Services' board of directors had serious problems with their organizational governance. These difficulties came to a head in an apparently unresolvable clash between the executive director and the board president. Given the preexisting board and organization perceptions, could an emergency board meeting produce a positive outcome, and would the executive director's participation be counterproductive? This led to their hire of Henry Wallerstein. Before Bluehills Family Services hired Henry Wallerstein, the board of directors had been considering closing the agency due to lack of funding and referrals. However, they decided to try one last time, hiring Wallerstein because of his experience in employee assistance programs (EAPs). Wallerstein promoted the agency in the community and acquired three EAP contracts within the city significantly increasing the agency's financial resource base. But the policies adopted by the company angered Wallerstein and he resigned giving three months of notice.
