Hispanic staff in non-Hispanic settings: issues and recommendations

Abstract

Human service agencies providing services to the Hispanic community are slowly recognizing the need to employ bilingual, preferably bicultural, staff. However, in the process of hiring Hispanic staff, administrators fail to consider institutional obstacles to service delivery. Human service organizations very often employ just one Hispanic staff member who, in turn, is faced with prodigious obstacles within the agency and the Hispanic community. The absence of professional literature addressing the obstacles encountered by Hispanic staff in non-Hispanic settings is glaring. The most common obstacles encountered by Hispanic staff in Worcester, Massachusetts, are analyzed, and a series of recommendations are presented that will assist administrators in maximizing the use of Hispanic staff.
