Racism, supervision, and organizational environment

Abstract

Racism and its impacts on supervision and on the organizational environment are discussed. In organizations there may be institutionalized expressions of racist practices. The supervisor can assume an important role in advocating organizational change or in maintaining the status quo. As part of middle management, the supervisor frequently encounters contradictory values. These values (professional, individual, racial, and organizational) must be resolved for the well-being of the organization.
