Minorities in Administration: A Review of Ethnicity's Influence in Management

Abstract

Theories about organizations & their management are described & placed along a continuum. A niche for the study of the influence of ethnicity in management is prescribed along this continuum. Literature is reviewed to identify distinct factors that confront minority administrators & that significantly impact management effectiveness & efficiency. Linkages between management behavior & organizational processes, & the ethnicity of administrators are exposed. Specific ethnic barriers relative to entry into management, fit in the informal organization, performance evaluations & promotions, & special role expectations are discussed. Management education that is cross-culturally sensitive is recommended.
