A Comparative Note on the Prevalence of Voluntary Associations in Geneva and Paris

Abstract

A comparative study is made of the number & nature of voluntary associations (VAs) in Paris & Geneva. Swiss data were gathered in 1952 through an analysis of the list of postal savings accounts, a service most organizations use. Since French law requires organizations to register with their prefectures, information regarding Paris VAs was obtained from the Departement de la Seine in 1964. Results revealed that growth of VAs, like the birth rate, declined during wartime & rose afterwards. Leisure groups were more prevalent in Paris, while Geneva had more common interest & mutual help groups. Although Switzerland has never been involved in a war, both Paris & Geneva had the same proportion of veterans groups. Similarity was also found in the numbers of professional, alumni, & youth VAs in both cities. 3 Tables. M. Cain.
