A Method for Coping with Diversity within Voluntary Organizations

Abstract

An adequate level of integration is necessary for the survival of groups & organizations. Disagreements over a voluntary association's goals & policies may reduce group integration. A vote-trading method for coping with disagreements among members is illustrated with data from a voluntary political association. Survey questionnaires were mailed to committee members (N = 38) & active members (N = 12). Strengths & limitations of this technique are analyzed. Benefits from vote-trading may be particularly significant for egalitarian voluntary associations & in formation & maintenance of coalitions. 4 Tables. Modified HA.
