An Alternative Theoretical Perspective on Race and Voluntary Participation

Abstract

In many studies of race & voluntary participation, the theoretical framework utilized focuses on motivation & SES as the key variables that explained racial differences in rates of voluntary participation within instrumental organizations. It is proposed here that organizational characteristics & typology are significantly related to the frequency of voluntary participation by black Americans. Efforts to increase such participation by blacks must first change the organizational characteristics that delimit participation. 4 Figures, 29 References. HA.
