The Effect of Labor Force Participation on Gender Differences in Voluntary Association Affiliation: A Cross-National Study

Abstract

In a secondary analysis of Gabriel A. Almond's & Sidney Veba's data (The Civic Culture, Princeton: Princeton U Press, 1963) is was found that the extent of voluntary association affiliation varies considerably from country to country & that men's membership rates consistently exceed women's. While controlling for some background variables (size of town, age, education, rated SES) reduces M-F differences by only a few % points, the addition of LF participation changes the findings dramatically. A large proportion of the difference in all 5 countries considered -- the US, GB, West Germany, Italy, & Mexico -- is due to the higher participation of men in work-related trade or labor unions. 1 Table, 16 References.
