Community Influences on Funds Raised by Human Service Volunteers

Abstract

Analysis of 372 United Way volunteer-run fund-raising campaigns shows that giving is higher in communities with stable or declining population, a high concentration of women in the work force, and high voter turnout and lower in areas of low population density and increasing population, many retail firms and limited manufacturing, and a concentration of government employees.
