Elite And Lower Volunteers In A Voluntary Association: Red Cross Chapter: A Study Of An American

Abstract

Descriptive data collected from a sample of a Red Cross chapter's board members and volunteer workers are presented in this paper. Following Etzioni's usage, these two types of volunteers are referred to as "elite" and "lower participants". Volunteer members of the Red Cross are compared on selected variables: recruitment into the organization, knowledge about the Red Cross, norms which apply to them, and the 'type of roles they play in the chapter. Two general themes are identified in these data and briefly discussed.
