AIDS Volunteers and Their Motivations: Theoretical Issues and Practical Concerns

Abstract

After reviewing a model of the volunteer process that draws on psychological theory & methodology & incorporates concerns of individual volunteers, volunteer organizations, & society at large, an inventory for assessing the motivations of AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome) volunteers is introduced. Findings from a survey of 615 volunteers working in AIDS organizations around the US demonstrate their motivations, choices of volunteer roles, & decisions about quitting or continuing service. A detailed set of recommendations for effective volunteer recruitment, assignment, & retention is offered. 4 Tables, 1 Exhibit, 38 References. Adapted from the source document.
