Altruism, Volunteers, and Volunteerism

Abstract

The public & private policies deemed appropriate to foster volunteering in the public interest are determined by society's view of the motives of volunteers & the basic nature of volunteering. Research results from several disciplines & fields of volunteering are reported, concluding that it is a mistake to view volunteers as principally altruistic. Volunteering is rather an instrumental (though not necessarily selfish) activity, done to achieve ends that the volunteer finds rewarding. The policy implications of this view are explored. 36 References. Modified HA.
