Comparing Volunteers and Employees in a Test of Etzioni's Compliance Typology

Abstract

Amitai Etzioni's compliance-based typology (A Comparative Analysis of Complex Organizations [see SA 11:7/63A7172]) provides a widely referenced foundation for scholars of voluntary associations. The extent to which this typology aids in understanding the actual interpersonal influence processes in organizations was examined. Two hypotheses were derived from his postulates concerning the relative subordination of low-level members: those holding formal leadership roles in normative organizations will be less influential than their utilitarian-organization counterparts; & low-level members of normative organizations will be more influential than low-level members of utilitarian organizations. Interviews & questionnaire responses of 101 affiliates of 14 service organizations did not support the hypotheses, leading to a reevaluation of the compliance typology, & the suggestion that "task" was its implicit basis. 2 Tables, 9 References.
