Classification of Human Services

Abstract

The classification of human services has been a relatively neglected area in social work. In the development of classification systems, the "deductive-theoretical" approach involves the development of an a priori system based on judgments of researchers or knowledgeable individuals as to how the classification should be ordered; the "inductive-empirical" approach involves gathering data from a variety of organizations and subjecting these data to various analyses that result in an orderly arrangement into appropriate categories. UWASIS II and SEARCH are examples of the former approach. These two human service classification systems are compared, and their implications for social work practice and education are discussed.
