Collaborative research for social service agencies: boon or bane?

Abstract

In an era of diminishing resources, collaborative relationships are likely to proliferate in the social services. In particular, agency administrators may seek to establish collaborative relationships with university-based research teams. However, such efforts may result in unexpected burdens for the agency and its staff. Principles of social exchange theory, as well as illustrations from an agency-research team collaborative program, demonstrate how the potential banes of collaborative research can be transformed into a boon for the agency.
