Voluntary Action and Experiential Education
Abstract
Works by J. Dewey, J. Piaget, & L. Kohlberg suggest that action is
at least as important as instruction for both cognitive & moral
development, but adolescence today is experiencing an action-poor,
although information-rich, period. Data suggest that only slightly
more than 50% of the current high-school graduates can reason at
Piaget's level of formal operational thought, & less than 25% have
reached Kohlberg's stage of principled morality. Modern education
should provide appropriate novel experiences dealing with
responsibility in order to increase this development. Many of these
experiences can be found in the voluntary sector, &
voluntary-sector scholars can play an important part in this process
by supporting the advantages claimed for this approach through
empirical research & evaluating pilot programs of this type. M.
