The Citizens Commission on AIDS: A Private-Sector Response to an Epidemic

Abstract

The Citizens Commission on AIDS for New York City and Northern New Jersey was created by a consortium of foundations to stimulate private- sector leadership in the region. Its activities included creating and seeking endorsements for a set of principles on AIDS and the workplace, advocating more drug-treatment facilities and community-based alternatives to hospital care, and continuing support for prevention and education. The commission format has advantages as well as disadvantages, which are explored in this case study.
