Human services in the context of work: evolving and innovative roles for occupational social work

Abstract

This article provides a brief overview of workforce trends and human service, the development of the occupational social work role, challenges for occupational social work, and introduces a special issue that contains 12 articles on this social work specialty. The issue represents a significant effort to put together conceptual, theoretical, and empirical work focused on the connection between the social work profession and the world of work. It places special emphasis on the diverse roles that social workers can take in the work context, from the micro to the macro, both within workplace settings and in the context of more traditional agencies, in local, national, and global contexts.
