Voluntary Self-Help Organizations: An Exploratory Study

Abstract

The origins of the voluntary self-help movement are traced, & the hypothesis that these organizations tend to substitute solidarity & autonomy of members for the bureaucratization & professionalization found in human service organizations is tested with data from 48 of these organizations in Albany, NY, collected from June to Dec 1972. Data are from structured interviews with presidents & vice-presidents of these organizations. Viewed in combination, the data tend to support the hypothesis. 4 Tables. M. Migalski.
