Self-Help Systems and the Professional as Volunteer: Threat or Solution?
Abstract
Many voluntary organizations reflect social trends. Self-help systems
are currently multiplying in the US, organized as systems of mutual
support around common problems such as abuse, alcoholism, anorexia,
& compulsive eating or gambling. The history & nature of the
self-help movement & the particular adjustments required of the
professionals associated with them in a helping capacity are reviewed.
