Self-Help Systems and the Professional as Volunteer: Threat or Solution?

Abstract

Many voluntary organizations reflect social trends. Self-help systems are currently multiplying in the US, organized as systems of mutual support around common problems such as abuse, alcoholism, anorexia, & compulsive eating or gambling. The history & nature of the self-help movement & the particular adjustments required of the professionals associated with them in a helping capacity are reviewed. 19 References. Modified HA.
