Citizen Participation in Nuclear Energy Policy
Abstract
Nuclear power plant development, government sponsorship, & citizen
reaction in the Netherlands are discussed. Increasing government
regulation of plant development since 1974 is reviewed, noting the
institution of participation mechanisms such as citizen grievance
procedures, public hearings, & regional planning commission
interventions. Characteristics of the antinuclear movement are
reviewed, noting its use of civil disobedience & protest tactics
as well as institutional channels. The impact of this movement on the
slowing of nuclear development & encouragement of alternative
energy research is emphasized. Modified HA.
