A social work role: promoting employment equity for people with serious and persistent mental illness.

Abstract

This article provides a historical overview of the vocational treatment of people with mental health conditions and reports on a research project that sought to: confirm that people with serious mental illness can work; clarify the circumstances around work that allow for their continued employment; develop a return-to-work or maintenance-at-work model; and demonstrate, test, and evaluate the model among those workers. The article concludes with a report of a training program that piloted the model in four settings, including the conclusions and recommendations drawn from that experience. (This is one of 12 articles in a special issue on occupational social work.)
