A Friend in Need: Use of Personal Connections by Social Work Clients
Abstract
Social work clients seek various means of redress when the services they desire are not forthcoming or adequate. These include both universalistic & particularistic avenues. Among the latter is the use of personal connections in the larger organization. Presented here is an example of the use of such connections in an Israeli hospital social work department, drawing on interview data from 214 clients & questionnaire data from their social workers. Examined are the availability of these connections, characteristics of clients who use them, & circumstances in which they are used. Findings are discussed in light of multicultural social work practice in general & the need for social workers & administrators to understand & develop means for dealing with the dangers posed by such strategies. 2 Tables, 30 References.
