Efficiency in Religious Organizations

Abstract

Applies data envelopment analysis, which compares organizations to comparable best-practice units, to human resource management in churches, focusing on the US Catholic Church, which has had an apparent shortage of priests in recent years. Drawing on 1990-1994 data for 174 Catholic dioceses & archdioceses, obtained from the Official Catholic Directory, three types of church output -- sacramental, educational, & nonsacramental social services -- & nine inputs -- eg, diocesan priests, deacons, & parishes -- are assessed, & it concluded that the church would benefit from a better distribution of priests, both in & across dioceses, & the use of deacons & priestless parishes can be effective in some circumstances. 4 Tables, 1 Appendix, 14 References.
