An Assessment of Joint Degrees in Social Work and Administration: Better Managers or One More Pawn
Abstract
Michael Borrero (U of Connecticut, Hartford) focuses on the findings
of a national study of graduate joint degree programs. Six programs
were evaluated based on their existence or beginning in Sept 1977.
Among the survey findings are: (a) 50% offered degrees in social work
combined with public administration-50% combined with business
administration, (b) the curriculum generally substituted the electives
of one degree program with the required courses of the second program,
(c) administration was handled by a coordinator from each program,
& (d) students felt caught between two different professional
perspectives, The major question in regard to such programs involves a
solid evaluation of the success of the graduates of such programs
vis-a-vis the general pool of social work administrators.
