Field Education for Social Welfare Administration: Integration of Social Policy and Administration

Abstract

Empirical data are provided in support of a conceptual framework for field education in social welfare administration, based on the integration of social policy & administration. The evidence supports the assumption that field education concerned with the goals of social programs is more effective than that focused solely on administrative means. Findings of several studies, particularly an ongoing program evaluating student performance & attitudes at Rutgers U Graduate School of Social Work, question the value of service delivery experience as a basis for education in social welfare administration. Field placements on the top & middle organizational levels were found to provide students with a goal focus. The implication of these findings for social work education are discussed. 6 Tables, 1 Figure. Modified HA.
