Cornerstone of social work administrative technology? A study of the utilization of Classic Program Management

Abstract

Reported on are the findings of a study to determine whether social work administrators who have been trained in Classic Program Management actually use that technology. The study population consisted of graduates of the social work concentration in administration at a school that had incorporated Classic Program Management into the curriculum. A structured questionnaire asking subjects to evaluate and rate the usefulness of the management skills they were taught was mailed to 154 program graduates; 81 questionnaires were returned. Findings revealed that while adequacy of preparation was related to use, rating skills as important to job performance was a better predictor of actual utilization. Of the demographic and organizational factors examined, only level of management was significantly correlated with overall use of program management. The discussion concludes that Classic Program Management will remain a foundation for social work administration practice. Improved educational strategies to communicate the holistic nature of the system are recommended. (Journal abstract, edited.)
