Career development in social work administration

Abstract

The encroachment of business and public administration into the leadership of human service agencies makes the need for career development in social work education increasingly urgent. The author's theme is that social work administration has the basic competence to continue to provide leadership for the human service field but that there is a need to market and represent this ability to the public in a more aggressive manner. Social work professionals, schools of social work, and professional associations have stakes in such an effort. The author stresses, and illustrates, the necessary tasks in the marketing of and career development in social work administration. He suggests systematic efforts in career development on both institutional and individual levels; and he sees both marketing and career development as intertwined with effective use of marketing techniques.
