Education and training in the workplace: social work interventions in the private sector

Abstract

This article describes two programs that the University of Michigan School of Social Work has been working with in two of the three major U.S. auto companies since the mid-1980s. One program involves the development of a training program for employee assistance program (EAP) representatives. The second program provides educational counseling in the workplace. These programs draw upon basic social work practice skills and principles and illustrate new potential roles for social workers and the challenges associated with program implementation in a complex work environment.
