Do human services executives need management education?

Abstract

To improve the productivity of human service organizations, many human service executives will need to improve their management skills and understandings. A study involving 174 executives showed that the executives expect management problems to increase in coming years. Formal management education is one recommended avenue for helping them solve these problems. The executives concluded that a curriculum of short courses is the best approach to management education and viewed the curriculum content found in MBA programs as being desirable for their needs. Few suggestions were made for curriculum change. The executives thought that time and financial constraints were the major barriers to obtaining more management education for themselves and their colleagues.
