Dimensions and Categories of Voluntary Organizations/Ngo's

Abstract

A list of dimensions that analytically classify voluntary organizations & nongovernment, nonprofit organizations (NGOs) is presented. The dimensions relevant to the general nature of organizational goals include: (1) the degree of instrumental vs expressive orientation, (2) internal vs external focus, & (3) degree of ideological orientation. The technical aspects of organizational goals include: goal multiplicity & clarity & type & degree of goal congruence. Basic demographic aspects of organizations include: size, growth rate, age, intensity of activity & territorial locus. Dimensions dealing with the relationships to the external social environment include: degree of structural autonomy, degree of cooperative activity, & degree of responsiveness to social forces. Membership aspects include: degree of formal membership base, exclusiveness vs inclusiveness, degree of homogeneity, & voluntariness vs coerciveness. Leadership & power aspects include: type of leaders, locus of power, & degree of power. Other internal aspects of the organization, such as extent of face-to-face relationships & degree of expected conformity, are also considered. M. Migalski.
