Staying alive: career selection and sustenance of community organizers

Abstract

A study explored why and how community organizers select and maintain themselves in their careers. Data were obtained from 42 organizers in grassroots, lobbying, and mobilizing organizations. The findings suggest the utility of both need and expectancy theories of motivation. Initial motivations were compared with change goals, valued organizer characteristics, and actual work tasks. Different patterns of supporting factors were found for organizers in these three distinct approaches to organizing. Implications for organizer training are suggested. (Journal abstract, edited.)
