Title Voluntarism and Socio-Economic Development: Some Key Questions for Research

Abstract

A list of the basic issues that have to be faced in the study of volunteerism & SE development in lesser developed countries (LDCs) is presented. Considerations should include: (1) the value of encouraging voluntary action in LDCs for its own sake, (2) the relationship between volunteerism & SE development, (3) the institutional structures most likely to facilitate development, & the relationship of voluntary associations & other groups to these structures, (4) the effect of program sponsorship on development, (5) whether indigenous voluntary organizations should be specifically supported, (6) the most effective geographical organization of voluntary associations, (7) the types of voluntary groups that most facilitate development in LDCs, (8) the best means to support volunteerism, (9) supporting voluntary organizations without disrupting them, & (10) the more general political questions regarding the role of voluntary associations in SE development.
