The Formation and Forms of Community Groups

Abstract

An exploratory study of five task-oriented community groups in three regions of GB is reviewed. Major issues described include: (1) group formation processes, particularly preconditions, developmental stages, & instigation via existing organization; (2) leadership structure development, stressing the implantation & growth of elitist tendencies; & (3) mechanisms to mitigate such elitism, eg, membership awareness, renunciation or rotation of leader roles, & broadening of decision-making power. The interplay between extant groups, individual activist motivation, & external provocation is stressed. Modified HA.
