Neighborhood Stabilization Strategies As Social Inventions
Abstract
The use of social inventions for the solution of human problems, advocated by William Whyte in his 1981 ASA presidential address, is illustrated in this case study of neighborhood stabilization in Akron, Ohio. Neighborhood stabilization is here defined as the maintenance of racial and economic integration in racially transitional areas through organized efforts. The case study focuses on the strategies used by one neighborhood organization to motivate lending institutions and the real estate industry to practice reinvestment and affirmative marketing in their neighborhood. The results are linked to a needed national social invention.
