Efficiency in human services: the case of education

Abstract

Cost-effectiveness analysis can point the way to doing more good with any given budget. In education, cost-effectiveness studies have yielded useful results. There has been some progress in measuring cost effectiveness of programs that produce multiple outcomes. It would be feasible for school systems to monitor their own cost effectiveness as a routine matter, but this will not happen unless schools are given the incentive to become more efficient. (This issue of Administration in Social Work contains 11 articles on efficiency and the social services.)
