Funding Uncertainty and Nonprofit Strategies in the 1980s

Abstract

Interviews conducted thrice between 1980 & 1989 with administrators of 555 nonprofit organizations in the US are drawn on to investigate the degree to which strategic action is related to changes in the perceived uncertainty of income from major types of funders. Results indicate that uncertainty is pervasive, with some nonprofits reporting increases & other decreases in uncertainty over time. The use of new revenue, legitimation, or retrenchment strategies is associated with the reduction of uncertainty for some types of nonprofit organizations, but not for others. 7 Tables, 29 References.
