A Research Note on the Voluntary Association Participation of Political Activists

Abstract

A study was conducted to examine the relationship between membership in voluntary organizations & participation in political activities. Data were gathered at the 1972 Democratic National Convention from 13 F & 14 M members of the Chicago "Challenge Delegation." Ss supplied sociodemographic data & responded to questions dealing with their voluntary memberships, both inside & outside of politics. Results revealed that most Ss were involved in some sort of political organization, eg, a campaign group, political coalition, or peace group. However, only 7 listed affiliations outside the political realm. Although caution in drawing conclusions is urged, due to the smallness of the sample, it is suggested that a larger-scale investigation be conducted to explore this trend toward relative inactivity in voluntary associations among political activists.
