Conventional cutback leadership and the quality of the workplace: is beta better?

Abstract

The literature on cutback management has focused primarily on cost-cutting strategies. Scant attention has been given to the quality of work life. Conventional assumptions of effective leadership reflect a preference for the Alpha style of leadership. The Alpha style emphasizes rationality, task orientation, hierarchical structures, and direct manipulation of the environment. Several aspects of the Alpha style can have negative consequences for the quality of the workplace. The alternative model, the Beta style, is characterized by a concern for sharing resources, collective problem solving, and interdependent, cooperative relationships. The Beta style offers advantages for preserving the quality of the workplace during retrenchment. (Journal abstract, edited.)
