Caught in between: the middle management bind

Abstract

Middle managers are in a bind--caught in between the demands, expectations, and desires of upper administration and the demands, expectations, and desires of front-line staff. The middle manager is the linchpin within the system, works totally on the inside, and consequently has no place to hide or escape. Given the middle-management bind, the intent of a discussion is to present three types of constraints--professional, organizational, and personal; to discuss and clarify each of these constraints through the use of case material; and to suggest middle-management strategies that will be conducive to effective performance in the broad domain associated with organizational change and toward creating alternative organizational structures.
