Contracted Services: Issues for the Nonprofit Agency Manager

Abstract

SAGE) This article reports the findings of one of the few studies to examine how administrators in nonprofit agencies manage contracted services. The analytic framework for explaining and describing managers' experience is their primary metaphor: contracted services as a game. CSA) Ways that nonprofit agency administrators manage contracted services are examined, drawing on 1987 interview data from 18 managers of 17 nonprofit agencies providing family, mental & physical health, elderly, & homeless services in the New York City metropolitan area. Management of contracted services is analyzed as a game, requiring basic administrative & political skills, a pragmatic philosophical perspective, & practical resource management. In addition, managers believe that freedom to function, to be creative, & to take risks is essential. Managers' perceptions of government funding of organizations, & of administrative, political, & ethical issues, are presented. 47 References. Adapted from the source document.
