Age and Social Involvement

Abstract

The relationships between age & 8 forms of social involvement are examined, assessing the independent effect that age has on participation. Based on census & questionnaire data from 274 Fs & 233 Ms aged 45+, modest but potentially meaningful relationships between age & involvement emerge. Further analysis shows, however, that when other factors are held constant, these relationships all but disappear. SES & select background factors are found to be the most significant predictors of involvement. The implications of these findings for gerontological research & the formulation of theory, particularly that concerning social integration of the ages, are discussed. 1 Appendix, 29 References.
